Getting to work might cost you money. In some cases, your boss might reimburse part of your costs. This is called a commuting allowance.
A commuting allowance is money you get from your boss for commuting to work. You can get this allowance if you travel by yourself, for example by car, bicycle or public transport. In some cases, your boss pays for your OV chipkaart. This is not something everyone gets. Ask your boss if you have a right to a commuting allowance.
If your boss asks you to pick up colleagues on your way to work, for example in a van or bus belonging to your work, this is counted as part of your working hours. Your boss must pay you for this.
If you move home and your living situation changes, it is a good idea to tell your boss. The change in the distance you travel to work might mean you receive a higher or lower commuting allowance.
If you are working temporarily in the Netherlands and you are employed by a company in another EU or EEA country or Switzerland, the rules for regular employees also apply to you. You can get a commuting allowance if your CAO says so. This allowance must always be an additional amount on top of the minimum wage.
If your boss asks you to do this, you must get paid for it because it counts as work. Talk to your boss about this or ask Het Juridisch Loket for advice.
If you move home and your address changes, you must always tell your boss. Your commuting allowance might change if you move closer to or further away from your work. In that case, the amount you get as a commuting allowance might increase or decrease. Tell your boss your new address on time to make sure you are paid the right amount.
No. This does not always happen in the Netherlands. The costs might be reimbursed, depending on the sector you work in and what your contract says. If you are unsure, ask your boss if you can get an allowance.
