A permanent contract does not end on a fixed date. You work for your employer for an unspecified period of time. This type of contract is also called an open-ended contract.
If you have a permanent contract, you work for your employer indefinitely. There is no fixed date on which your contract ends. You may resign but a notice period applies.
In the Netherlands, you are given a permanent contract if you have already had three temporary contracts or zero-hours contracts in a row. We call this being employed on a permanent basis. You are also given a permanent contract if you have worked under temporary contracts for more than three years. In that situation, your boss is not allowed to give you another temporary contract.
A permanent contract gives more security. You know you will have a job and income in the future. You will receive wages if you are sick and have a right to holiday days. In many cases, you also get a pay rise. Having a permanent contract makes it easier to rent a home or get a loan in the Netherlands.
You automatically get a permanent contract if you:
The period between the end of one contract and the start of the next contract must not be more than six months. Important! Your CAO might contain different rules.
A temporary contract has an end date. It ends automatically on that date. A permanent contract has no end date. It continues until you or your employer terminates it.
A permanent contract gives you have more security. You know that your work will continue. You are entitled to wages, holiday days and other benefits. If your employer wants to end the contract, it must comply with the rules on dismissal.
