If you do an internship, you work and learn at the same time. You work at a company or organisation while you are studying and do tasks that are in keeping with your studies.
During an internship, you spend time learning in a workplace. This enables you to develop the skills associated with your studies and get work experience. Many schools consider internships to be an important part of a child’s education. The school provides help and has rules for internships.
If you are in secondary education, an internship is often a compulsory part of your education. You work at a company for several weeks or months and learn about the practical aspects of subjects you learn at school. For example, you could do an internship at a garage, care home or shop.
Many MBO, HBO and university students also do internships. They are supervised and work on real assignments. Examples include internships as a nurse in a hospital (MBO), a communications assistant at an advertising agency (HBO) or a lawyer at a law firm (university).
You might get an internship allowance. This is a small payment you receive for your work. However, this depends on what you are studying, the company where you are doing your internship and the arrangements that have been made. An internship allowance is less common for pupils in secondary education, and more common for MBO, HBO and university students.
Internships vary in duration. Internships for pupils in secondary education often last for several weeks, but those for students in tertiary education can last several months. The school and the company make a joint decision on how long the internship will last.
It is useful if you can speak Dutch, but it is not always compulsory. Some companies also work in English. In many cases, the school can help you with your Dutch so you will be able to work more effectively while you are on your internship.
