Private education

In the Netherlands, you are also able to opt for private education.  

Private schools 

Private education is education at a school that is not funded by the government. These schools are called private schools. Parents or pupils pay tuition fees. Education is often provided on a smaller scale. In some cases, there is a greater focus on personal support and special teaching methods. 

Dutch education legislation 

Private schools usually have classes with fewer children. Pupils often have more contact with teachers. Private schools choose their own subjects and set their own rules but must comply with Dutch education legislation. Some schools offer classes in another language, such as English or French, as well as Dutch. 

Costs of private education 

The tuition fees charged for private education vary, depending on the school and the form of education. They are between €5,000 and €25,000 a year on average. Additional costs might also be charged for books, school excursions or sports, for example. You can often pay in monthly or quarterly instalments. Registering with a private school 

You usually register by filling in the registration form on the school's website. An interview or test might take place first. In many cases, you have to show a passport or residence document. Registration is possible at any time of the year, although some schools have fixed start dates.
