Coverage

Your health insurance coverage is the healthcare that your insurance reimburses. If you live or work in the Netherlands, you must have basic health insurance. 

Basic package 

You pay a fixed amount (premium) each month for your health insurance. The healthcare that your health insurance pays for is called your health insurance coverage. It is also called the basic package. Every year, the government decides what the basic package includes. 

Main forms of healthcare covered by basic insurance:  

• GP 
• Hospital and emergency assistance 
• Medicines 
• Maternity care and care provided by an obstetrician/midwife 
• Basic mental healthcare 

Additional health insurance coverage 

The basic package does not include some healthcare, such as dental care for adults or physiotherapy. If you want to insure these costs as well, you can take out supplementary insurance. Although this costs more money, it means other medical costs are fully or partially reimbursed. 

Foreign travel and health insurance 

Are you going to be in another European country temporarily? If you have an EHIC card (EU healthcare card), you will also receive any necessary medical assistance that comes under that country’s basic cover. You might need travel insurance for other countries.
