The dentist checks your teeth and carries out dental treatments. 

What does a dentist do? 

The dentist checks that your teeth are healthy. You can visit the dentist for a dental check-up or because you have a problem with a tooth. You might have to go back to the dentist for treatment, such as a filling or extraction. 

What does a dental hygienist do? 

Many dentist’s practices have a dental hygienist. A dental hygienist helps you to keep your teeth and gums healthy. You can go to a dental hygienist to have your teeth cleaned or to prevent gum disease, for example. You do not need to have a letter of referral from your dentist.  

Registering and making an appointment 

You choose your own dentist and register with that dentist. You can then call the dentist to make an appointment. Always bring your health insurance card and identity document with you. Make sure you arrive on time and go to the reception desk. 

Costs and insurance 

The costs of an adult’s visit to the dentist are normally not reimbursed under the basic health insurance package. However, dentist’s costs for children up to age 18 are reimbursed. You can take out additional dental insurance for adults.
