BSO

BSO means out-of-school care. It is care for children aged 4 to 12. This type of childcare is provided before and after school and during school holidays. 

Childcare 

Out-of-school care (BSO) is for children who attend primary school. BSO facilities take care of children outside school hours so they somewhere to go before or after school or during holidays. BSO is part of childcare in the Netherlands and is intended for children aged 4 to 12. 

Costs of BSO 

BSO is not free. You pay a monthly fee to the childcare facility. The cost depends on the number of hours of care, the hourly rate and sometimes the location. Many parents get childcare allowance from Belastingdienst. This is a contribution from the government to reduce the cost of childcare. How much allowance you get depends on your income and the number of children attending childcare. To claim the allowance, visit the Belastingdienst website. 

Times  

All BSO facilities provide childcare after school, and many also do this during school holidays. Some facilities also provide childcare before school begins. This is sometimes called pre-school care (VSO). Care after school ends is sometimes called after-school care (NSO). Choose times that suit the school's hours and your work. Ask the BSO facility about when it can provide childcare. 

Other forms of childcare 

Besides BSO, there are other forms of childcare: daycare (day nursery) for children aged 0 to 4, and preschool for toddlers aged 2 to 4. Childcare provided by a registered childminder is also available for children aged 0 to 12. Choose the form of childcare that suits your child's age and your schedule.
