Childcare

Childcare means that someone else temporarily looks after your child when you are working or studying. In the Netherlands, childcare is available for children aged 0 to 12. 

Types of childcare 

There are different forms of Dutch childcare. Examples include daycare, out-of-school care (BSO) and childcare provided by a registered childminder. Children play and engage in activities. You choose a form of childcare that suits your child and your working hours. 

Daycare 

Daycare is care for children aged 0 to 4. They are not yet attending primary school. Your child goes to a day nursery or a childminder during the day.  

Preschool 

Preschool is a special form of care with extra education for toddlers. This is called Voor- en Vroegschoolse Educatie (VVE) in Dutch. It is intended for children aged 2 to 4 who need extra help with the Dutch language or their development. In many cases you need a referral from the early childhood clinic. 

BSO 

Out-of-school care (BSO) is for children aged 4 to 12. BSO facilities provide care for children before and after school and during holidays. Childcare can be provided in a day nursery or by a childminder. Care before school starts is sometimes also called pre-school care (VSO). Care after school ends is sometimes called after-school care (NSO).  

Lunchtime supervision  

Lunchtime supervision is during the primary school lunch break. Children eat their lunch and play under adult supervision. 

Cost 

The cost of childcare in the Netherlands depends on your income. You might have a right to childcare allowance. You claim this allowance from Belastingdienst. You do not get childcare allowance for lunchtime supervision.
