Consumer rights in the Netherlands protect you as a buyer. When you buy something or take out a subscription, you have rights. We refer to this as consumer protection in the Netherlands.
The government sets rules to protect consumers. Companies must be honest and clear. Information about prices, conditions and contact details must be correct. Products and services must be safe. Supervisory authorities monitor companies. The rules can be found in the Consumer Protection (Enforcement) Act.
If you buy something in a shop or online, you are entitled to clear information. Additional rules apply to online purchases. You must be given all the information about the item you are purchasing before you buy it. You may also return your purchase within a certain period of time. Read the terms and conditions carefully. Keep your order form and e-mails from the seller.
When you take out a subscription, the subscription's price, duration and cancellation procedure must be clear. Information about renewals and additional charges must also be clear. You can cancel your subscription in accordance with the rules contained in the contract. If you receive an offer that is unclear or feel under pressure to sign the contract, say no and ask for all the information first.
Misleading and aggressive selling methods are prohibited. Prices must be complete and understandable. Hidden costs are not allowed. Companies must advertise honestly and not give false information.
If you have a problem with a product or service, contact the seller or provider first. Explain your complaint clearly and keep proof. If you cannot resolve the complaint together, report your complaint to the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM). You can also ask questions or report misleading or aggressive selling tactics to that authority.
You are entitled to honest information, clear prices and safe products or services. Additional rules for information and returns apply to online purchases. Companies must not mislead you or put you under pressure. Always read the terms and conditions, and keep your receipt and the e-mails that specify what you agreed.
Check the price, duration and procedure for cancelling the contract. Make sure you follow the rules in the terms and conditions when you cancel your subscription. Always ask for a written confirmation. If an offer is unclear or misleading: do not sign anything, do not pay, and report the problem.
Stop the conversation or ask for all the information on paper. If something is unclear, do not pay and do not sign anything. Note the seller's name and the date. Submit a complaint to the company. If you cannot resolve the situation together with the seller, make use of consumer protection in the Netherlands and report the problem to ACM ConsuWijzer: consuwijzer.nl.
