Opening a bank account

You need a Dutch bank account to receive your wages and pay your rent and everyday costs, among other things.

In the Netherlands, you need a bank account. Your employer transfers your salary to this account.  You also use your account to pay your rent, energy and other bills. These are often paid automatically every month. You use your bank card to pay in shops or withdraw cash from an ATM. 

What do you need to take with you to the bank? 

If you are going to open a bank account, you have to bring a valid passport or ID card with you, as well as your citizen service number (BSN) and the address where you live. Some online banks temporarily accept a foreign address. In that case, you will have tell them your Dutch address later. 

Costs of a current account 

A regular current account usually costs €1.50 to €5 a month. Online banks are often cheaper and sometimes do not have any fixed fees. Opening an account is usually free. You might have to pay one eurocent (€0.01) for an identity check. 

Choosing a bank 

Compare the monthly fees charged by banks. Also pay attention to the languages that are spoken by the customer service team and the quality of the app. If you want to deposit cash, check that this is possible because it is often difficult with online banks. Choose a bank that suits your needs and budget.
