Solar energy

Solar energy is power from the sun. Solar panels allow you make electricity from solar energy. This helps you keep your energy costs down and also reduces pollution. 

Solar panels 

Solar panels in the Netherlands convert sunlight into electricity. You use this electricity in your home. This means you will buy less electricity from your energy company. This is good for the environment and can save you money. 

Benefits of solar panels 

Solar panels reduce the amount of energy from oil or coal that you use. This also reduces carbon emissions, which is better for nature and the climate. The construction of solar panels is being constantly improved so that they last longer and produce more power. Using solar panels reduces your energy bills. 

Subsidy for solar panels 

You cannot get a subsidy for solar panels in the Netherlands. You can, however, get a loan for solar panels under the energy saving loan scheme. In addition, solar panels you install on top of your home or an outbuilding are subject to VAT at a rate of 0%. Ask your municipality what the rules are for installing solar panels. 

Supplying electricity back to the energy company

 Any electricity you do not use can be returned to the energy company until 31 December 2026. This electricity is offset against electricity you use later, for example in the winter. This scheme will no longer apply as from 1 January 2027. From that time on you will only receive a small payment for the electricity you supply back to the energy company. 

Generating electricity together 

If you do not have a roof of your own, you can team up with other people to get solar panels. You can get a subsidy together under the SCE scheme (Subsidieregeling Coöperatieve Energieopwekking). This is a scheme for energy cooperatives and associations of owners (VvEs). This is useful if you live in an apartment complex, for example.
