Temporary housing means that you are living in a house, apartment or room in the Netherlands for a short period of time.
Many people rent a house, apartment or room when they work in the Netherlands for a short time. We call this temporary housing. Your employer or employment agency will sometimes arrange a room for you. You can also rent a room yourself through organisations or private landlords.
If you are living in the Netherlands temporarily, you will need a temporary address. You can use this address for your post, registration and other practical matters. If you are working in the Netherlands for more than four months, you must register with the municipality. This will make your temporary address official.
If you are planning to stay in the Netherlands for a longer period, you can register with a housing association in order to get social sector rented housing. Be aware that housing associations look at your income. There is often a long waiting period. You also have to respond to any offers of vacant accommodation. You will not be allocated a house automatically.
You can also get help from private organisations or estate agents who offer temporary rooms or housing. You pay rent and in some cases a mediation fee. Always check the terms and arrangements in your tenancy agreement. Do not forget to ask if gas, water and energy are also included in the rent.
If you have fled from Ukraine, you can live in the Netherlands temporarily under the Temporary Protection Directive. The municipality will help you find a place to live, for example in a reception centre such as a sports hall or hotel. If you can arrange accommodation yourself, that is good too. You must always register with the municipality. This gives you access to important services such as healthcare and education.
