If you own a car in the Netherlands, you have to take out car insurance. 

Car insurance in the Netherlands 

By law, you have to take out third-party insurance (this is called ‘WA’ insurance). This insurance covers the costs of other people’s damage if you cause an accident. You are not allowed to use your car on the road if you do not have this insurance. 

Types of car insurance 

Besides third-party insurance, there is insurance that gives you additional cover: 

• WA+ (limited comprehensive): this covers damage caused by storms, fire or someone breaking into your car. 
• All-risk (fully comprehensive): this also covers damage to your own car, even if this is your own fault. 

You decide which type of insurance is best for your car. Many older cars are only covered by third-party insurance. Some kinds of damage might not covered by your insurer. Make sure you always check the policy conditions carefully. 

Cost of car insurance 

The price depends on how old you are, where you live, what type of car you have, and how many claim-free years you have. The longer you have gone without making a claim, the lower your premium. You pay a premium every month or every year. Compare different insurance policies online before you make a choice.
