Your health insurance does not reimburse all the medical expenses you might incur while you are on holiday. Travel insurance or supplementary insurance to your basic insurance can cover these additional medical expenses.
If you travel outside the Netherlands, you remain insured for urgent medical care. However, your basic insurance does not cover all costs, so it is a good idea to take out extra insurance when you go on holiday. You can take out travel insurance or supplementary insurance on top of your basic insurance.
If you are travelling within Europe, take the European Health Insurance Card with you. This card gives you access to medical care that cannot wait until you are home again. The excess of your health insurance applies to these costs. You can request the card from your health insurer.
If you need treatment while you are outside the Netherlands, your basic health insurance will reimburse a maximum of what that treatment would cost in the Netherlands. If the treatment is more expensive (for example, because you are treated at a private clinic), you will have to pay extra. Travel insurance or supplementary insurance can cover some or all of these costs.
Costs for transport home if you become sick or die (repatriation) are not covered by your basic health insurance. They are only reimbursed if you have travel insurance or supplementary insurance.
The Netherlands has made agreements with some countries on healthcare during temporary stays in those countries. If you are going on a longer trip, Dutch law will continue to apply to you and you can keep your health insurance for up to one year. If you have any questions, contact your insurer.
Travel insurance with luggage cover can compensate you for the theft or loss of your belongings during a flight, in a hotel or on the street, for example. Pay attention to the policy's terms and conditions and the maximum amounts.
It reimburses medically necessary care. Within Europe you need to show a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). You will be reimbursed no more than what that care costs in the Netherlands. The excess of your health insurance applies. If the care provided abroad is more expensive (for example, because you went to a private clinic), you have to pay some of the costs yourself. Repatriation is not included in the basic package.
Travel insurance can cover extra medical expenses that your basic insurance does not reimburse, or only partially reimburses, when you are outside the Netherlands. Another possibility is supplementary insurance. Repatriation (transport home if you become sick or die) can also be covered by travel insurance or supplementary insurance. Carefully read the terms and conditions of your insurance policy.
Both types of insurance can cover additional medical expenses outside the Netherlands and repatriation. The differences and the precise amounts reimbursed depend on your insurance. Ask your insurer what exactly is covered by your supplementary health insurance or travel insurance.
