Safety

In the Netherlands there are rules and organisations that ensure your safety in the home, for example in the case of fire or in dangerous situations. 

Fire safety in the home 

Smoke alarms must be installed in every home in the Netherlands. They must be present on every floor where people sleep. A smoke alarm makes a sound when there is smoke so you can escape on time. Do not block the escape route, such as the stairs or the door, by leaving items in your way, and make sure all electrical appliances are safe. 

The fire brigade helps with fires 

If there is a fire, you can call the fire brigade on 112. The fire brigade comes quickly and helps you leave the building safely. The fire brigade also helps if there is a gas leak or an accident involving hazardous substances. Do not be afraid to ask for help, even if you do not speak Dutch. 

The police ensure security 

The police help in situations involving danger, violence or theft. Call 112 in an emergency or 0900 8844 if the situation is not an emergency. You can also make an anonymous report. The police in the Netherlands are there for everyone and many police officers speak several languages. 

Sirens on Monday 

Every first Monday of the month, at noon, you can hear a loud noise outside when the sirens are tested. You do not have to do anything. If you hear the sirens on a different day or at a different time, go inside, close all windows and doors, and turn on the radio or television.
