The BRP contains the details of people who live in the Netherlands as well as people who do not live in the Netherlands but who have a relationship with the Netherlands.
The government uses the BRP to check your identity and provide services. Once you have been entered in the BRP, you will be given a citizen service number (BSN). You need this number to apply for a DigID, take out health insurance or open a bank account in the Netherlands, for example. That is why the BRP must always contain your correct details.
The BRP contains information such as:
The BRP consists of two parts:
The Non-residents Records Database (RNI) is the part of the BRP that is specially for people who are living in the Netherlands briefly or do not live in the Netherlands. You can be registered in the RNI if you do not live in the Netherlands or if you have come to the Netherlands for less than four months in order to work or study.
You can register at any of the 19 RNI desks in the Netherlands. Take a valid identity document with you. Once you are registered, you will be given your citizen service number (BSN).
Tip: If you registered at an RNI desk, you can use the MyRNI app. This free app makes it easy to view and edit your details, such as your address and phone number. Use your DigiD to log in.
If you come to the Netherlands temporarily to live or work, you might be able to supply your details before you are officially registered at an RNI desk. This is called 'preregistration'. You can do this online, using the form on the website of RvIG (the National Office for Identity Data). By preregistering, you ensure your details can be entered quickly in the Non-residents Records Database (RNI). You will also know which documents you need to take with you when you register and you will be able to arrange your registration quickly once you are in the Netherlands.
The RNI contains your most important details, such as:
Compared to the RNI, the BRP contains more detailed information. For example, it includes information about your family (such as your partner or children), your residence permit, your home address in the Netherlands and your parents.
Registration in the RNI is intended for people who do not live in the Netherlands or who live here only briefly. That is why registration is simpler and the RNI only contains information the government actually needs in order to stay in contact.
The BRP and RNI ensure that the government knows who you are and where you live or are staying. The benefit for you is that your details are kept safe in one place and you do not need to keep resubmitting the same information.
If you think that there is a mistake in your details in the BRP or RNI, you can get this corrected.
If this does not resolve the situation, you can ask Meldpunt Fouten in Overheidsregistraties (MFO) for help. You can read more about changing your details on the page that explains what to do If your details change.
The BRP is the register that contains the details of everyone who lives in the Netherlands. These details, such as your address, family and nationality, are kept up to date by the municipality. The RNI is the part of the BRP specially for people who do not live in the Netherlands but have contact with the Dutch government, for example because they work or study here or are paid a benefit. The RNI is also for people who will be staying in the Netherlands for less than four months. The RNI only records their most important details, such as their name, date of birth, nationality and address outside the Netherlands,
You can always view your own details. If you are registered with a municipality, you can get an overview of your details from the municipality or online at MijnOverheid.nl. If you are registered at an RNI desk, you can request an extract from the RNI or you can use the MyRNI app. Once in a while, check that everything is still correct. This will help you avoid problems with allowances, your work or healthcare.
If you think something is wrong, you can have it corrected. If you registered with a municipality, make an appointment with the municipality. Take a valid identity document with you to your appointment and, if necessary, documents that show your correct details (such as a birth certificate).
If you are registered at an RNI desk, contact an RNI desk. They will investigate the matter and correct your details if an error has been made. You will always be notified of the outcome of the investigation. You can also update your details using the MyRNI app.
