In the Netherlands, it is important that your registered details are always correct so that you can take care of important matters. This page explains what you need to do if your details change.
If you do not live in the Netherlands or you are in the Netherlands temporarily (less than four months), your details are registered in the Non-residents Records Database (RNI). You can change some details yourself, but not all of them.
If you do not live in the Netherlands, you cannot change any details relating to your children, parents, partner or marital status. You can report these changes if you are registered in a Dutch municipality.
Visit the website of RvIG (the National Office for Identity Data) to find out more.
If you live in the Netherlands and you have registered with the municipality in which you live, you are registered in the Personal Records Database (BRP).
The municipality will update your details in the Personal Records Database (BRP). The information will then be shared automatically with other government authorities, such as Belastingdienst or DUO.
The government uses your details to keep in touch with you and make sure you get the right information and allowances. That is why it is important to report changes on time. By doing that, you make sure your details in the Personal Records Database (BRP) or Non-residents Records Database (RNI) are still correct and complete.
Tip: if you are registered at an RNI desk, you can use the MyRNI app. This free app makes it easy to view and change your details, such as your address and phone number. Use your DigiD to log in.
It is your responsibility to make sure changes are reported on time. If your details in the BRP are incorrect, you could receive a fine known as an administrative penalty. It is payable if, for example, you move home but do not report this on time or if you have to choose a postal address but do not do so.
If you receive a fine and you have questions about this, you can get help at a Work in NL information point. If you disagree with the fine, you can submit an objection to the municipality.
Some do. Government organisations such as Belastingdienst will receive your new details automatically. Your health insurer will usually be informed automatically of a change of address or name, but this does not always happen. Your bank and employer do not automatically receive all information, so it is a good idea to contact them yourself and inform them of any changes.
If you see that your details contain a mistake and you do not live in the Netherlands, you might not be able to correct the mistake yourself. Many details (such information on your children, partner or marital status) will not be changed until you re-register in the Netherlands. If the mistake was made before you moved away from the Netherlands, contact the municipality you lived in most recently in the Netherlands.
