Working but not living in the Netherlands

This page explains what you need to do if you come to work in the Netherlands but still live in another country. 

Registering as a non-resident 

If you work in the Netherlands but live in another country, you can be registered in the Non-residents Records Database (RNI). This is not compulsory. Registration is necessary, however, if you want to get a BSN. Once you have a BSN, you can apply for a DigiD and arrange matters such as your health insurance, work and taxes. 

Registering at an RNI desk 

Registration is possible at any of the 19 RNI desks in the Netherlands. 

• Before you go along to the RNI desk, enter your details in the form on the website of RvIG (the National Office for Identity Data). 
• Once you have completed the form, you will be given a personal QR code. 
• Make an appointment with an RNI desk .
• Make sure you take the QR code and your identity document with you when you go to the RNI desk. 

What happens after you have been registered 

Once you are registered, you will be given a citizen service number (BSN). This allows you to arrange important matters such as work, tax and health insurance. Your details will be kept in the RNI even if you stop working in the Netherlands.
