If you want to start your own business, you must register your business with the Chamber of Commerce (KVK).
If you are new to the Netherlands and you want to be self-employed, you have to register first. You do this in three steps:
1. City hall Will you be living or working in the Netherlands for more than four months? To register, make an appointment with the city hall of the municipality where you are staying within five days of your arrival. You will get a BSN (citizen service number). If you will be living or working in the Netherlands for less than four months, you need to register in the Non-resident Records Database (RNI).
2. Registration with KVK Make an appointment with the Chamber of Commerce. During that appointment you will be entered in the Business Register and you will then get a KVK number. You will also be automatically registered with Belastingdienst.
3. Address and taxes You need to have a Dutch address. This could be your home address, an office address or an alternative address. You pay taxes: VAT, income tax and in some cases municipal taxes.
Registering means giving your information to KVK. This is how the government knows you are self-employed.
