If you have a disease or disability that stops you from doing certain things, such as working or studying, you might have a right to help and support.
In the Netherlands, you have a right to support if you have a disability that lasts for an extended period of time, such as a physical disability, poor eyesight or hearing, or mental health problems. UWV or your municipality will work with you to see what kind of support would be best for you.
Examples of support include a special chair or computer in your workplace, and help with finding a job. If travelling is difficult for you, you can sometimes get a travel allowance, too.
In some cases, you can get extra money under specific legislation (WIA or Wajong Act). This is called a supplement or top-up. You will then receive part of your wages plus some extra money. This means your income will be higher than it would be if you did not work.
You can ask UWV for support with a disability. UWV will ask you to fill in forms and you might have to attend an interview or medical examination. Make sure you bring along documents, such as a doctor's certificate. The government will look at your situation and decide whether you will get money or another form of support.
In many cases you do. UWV wants to know what you are still able to do and what you cannot do, so you might be asked to see a doctor or for an interview. The doctor will assess your health with you so that UWV can decide what support or which benefit you will get.
If you have a disability that will not last for long, you normally get no financial support. You can be given other forms of support, such as modified work or shorter working hours.
If you can do more work, UWV will review your situation. Your benefit might change or stop now that you are able to earn more again. You will always be given an explanation and support to ensure everything is clear.
