In the Netherlands, there are tax rules for gifts and donations. Some donations are deductible for income tax purposes.
A gift is something you receive, such as money or items. A donation is something you give, for example to a family member or a charity. There are rules for gifts and rules for donations. Sometimes you have to pay tax on gifts, and sometimes donations are deductible for income tax purposes.
If you give money or items to a charity, this is called a donation. You can sometimes deduct donations from your income when you file your tax return. This reduces the amount of tax you pay. Only donations to an official charity (an organisation with ANBI status) can be deducted. You can make a donation once or donate money every year. You often get a larger amount of tax back if you make a donation every year.
In the Netherlands, if you receive money or a large gift you might have to pay tax. This is called gift tax. You get to keep some of the money tax-free. The tax-free portion depends on who the money is from, for example your parents or someone else. If you receive a very large sum of money, for example so that you can buy a house, you usually have to pay tax.
That depends on the situation. You do not have to report small gifts. You might have to pay tax on large gifts or large sums of money. This depends on the value of the gift and your relationship to the person who gave it to you. It is therefore always a good idea to check the rules with Belastingdienst.
This is only allowed if the money went to an official charity. A list of recognised organisations (organisations with ANBI status) can be found at belastingdienst.nl. Any donations you make to these organisations can be reported in your tax return. By supporting the charity, you will pay less tax.
If you make a one-off donation, you donate a single amount. For example, you might give €50 to a charity. Regular donations are fixed arrangements that are usually in effect for five years. In this case, you pay a fixed amount every year. You often get a larger amount of tax back if you make a donation every year. This can be useful if you often want to make donations.
