A payslip is a paper or e-mail from your work that shows how much you have earned.
If you work in the Netherlands, you get a payslip from your employer. This happens for the first time when you are paid your first wages. You will also receive a new payslip if there are any changes when it comes to your pay or tax. Many people get a payslip every time they are paid, but this is not compulsory.
Your payslip shows how much you earn. It shows your gross wages and how that amount is made up (for example, your basic wages and holiday pay). It also shows how many hours you work, the period covered, and whether you have a permanent or temporary contract. Your name and your employer's name are also on your payslip.
Your payslip also shows the tax and contributions on your wages that your employer pays to the government. Deductions are made from your gross salary to pay taxes and contributions, for example for your pension, and premiums for your health insurance. The money left over is your net salary: this is the amount that is paid into your bank account.
Your payslip shows your gross wages, the hours you worked, your type of contract and all the amounts that make up your wages.
You can use your payslip to check that you are being paid enough wages and your employer is paying taxes and contributions correctly.
