Surviving dependants' pension

A surviving dependants' pension is a pension you receive if your partner dies. 

Types of surviving dependants' pension 

There are different surviving dependants' pensions: 

• Benefits under the General Surviving Dependants Act (ANW); 
• Surviving dependants' pension through your work; 
• Life insurance. 

General Surviving Dependants Act (ANW) 

Under the General Surviving Dependants Act, if your partner dies and you meet certain conditions you will receive ANW benefit. Everyone who lives or works in the Netherlands is automatically insured for this benefit. 

Surviving dependants' pension through work 

If your partner’s employer has a pension scheme, you are usually entitled to a surviving dependants' pension through work.  

Life insurance 

A personal life insurance policy can be taken out so that you receive additional income as the surviving partner if your partner dies.
