The Working Conditions Act is a Dutch law on health and safety at work. This law applies to everyone who works in the Netherlands.
The Working Conditions Act (in Dutch: Arbeidsomstandighedenwet) says that you must be able to work in a safe and healthy way. The employer must ensure this. As an employee, you must follow the rules to ensure you and others are safe while you work.
If you work with machinery, be aware that some medicines can make you feel tired or less focused. Ask your GP or company doctor for advice. If you are taking medicine, you do not have to tell your boss but you must still be able to work safely.
Alcohol and drugs can be dangerous in the workplace. You may feel worse or react more slowly. If you feel this way, do not go to work. Your boss can send you home if you are under the influence.
If you notice that a colleague has been drinking or taking drugs, talk to them calmly. If you do not feel safe, report the situation to your manager. If the situation is dangerous, stop working.
If your employer does not comply with the Working Conditions Act, it is breaking the law. You can report this to your manager or a confidential adviser. You can also ask your union for help or report the matter to the Netherlands Labour Authority. You must never be punished for reporting something.
You have to follow the rules too. Wear protective equipment, such as a helmet or safety glasses. Follow your boss’s instructions. If you spot anything dangerous, report it immediately. By doing this you work safely and also help your colleagues.
