Bullying in the workplace is prohibited in the Netherlands. Employers must ensure that everyone has a safe and respectful workplace.
Bullying in the workplace can take many forms. It can involve mocking or excluding someone, swearing at them, gossiping about them or constantly giving them unpleasant tasks to do. If you experience bullying in the workplace, you might become stressed or sick or no longer be able to do your work properly.
Your employer must ensure that the bullying stops and does not happen again. Your boss must have a plan to protect you and your colleagues. That plan must include where you can get help if you are bullied at work, for example.
If you are being bullied in the workplace, talk to your boss about the bullying. If you would prefer to do this anonymously, talk to a confidential adviser or contact the occupational health and safety service. You can also ask your union or the company's works council for help. If nothing changes, you can report the matter to the Netherlands Labour Authority. It checks whether businesses follow the rules. You can also do this if you work through an employment agency.
If you become stressed or develop any other health issues as a result of bullying in the workplace, make sure you tell the company doctor. The company doctor can help you deal with the situation.
